It's not about you

Warriors protect others, skills are honed for combat, attitude is polarized to defeat fear, and training is bread until the warrior can't get it wrong.

In life there is balance and so there should also be compassion and empathy.

Warriors who have been in true combat come out with the understanding that it's not about them, it's about the safety of others be it team mates, family, country and those who cannot protect themselves.

Student Creed

We all need a code to follow whether it is religious in nature, a set of guidelines for behavior such as the military code of conduct or rules in school a code is the glue which binds members of society into tribes.

I use a simple student creed to remind students of their primary objectives in class. Here it is...

Student Creed

I will study

I will practice

I will use

I will improve  ossh!

The intent is makes oneself better. My instructors have their students recite the creed at the end of every matt chat where we explain lessons of life and how they blend our martial skill with every day behavior.

Think before you speak!

When I was younger the phrase was "think before you speak".

Now lets use this logic in self defense especially if you are trying to deescalate the situation before it becomes physical. Think of what the other person is thinking, why are they doing what they are, this is referred to as empathy. Understanding where the other person is coming from can guide you to say the right thing which calms the situation down and prevents escalation of the situation.
Not getting in a fight means everybody walks away...
